Five lessons we learned after building a pool

Last summer, we took the big step: installing a pool in our backyard. The kids practically lived in it, and to be honest, we enjoyed it just as much. But, like with any new project, there were a few things we hadn’t really considered beforehand. Now that we’ve had a full season as pool owners, here are five things we’ve learned.

  1. Maintenance is manageable, but help is available

Beforehand, we thought pool maintenance would be a much bigger task. But once we got into a routine of cleaning and checking the water quality, it turned out to be pretty simple. That said, we now understand why some people choose to outsource it. There are professional services that will clean your pool regularly and add the necessary chemicals, so you hardly have to think about it yourself.

  1. Pool equipment is functional, but not pretty

One thing we didn’t fully realize beforehand was just how visible and prominent the pool equipment would be in the backyard. The filter, pump, and heater all do their job, but they’re not exactly adding to the aesthetics of the space. We soon discovered that you can install something both practical and stylish to hide them—a pool equipment enclosure.

Fortunately, we found a sleek and durable solution: a sturdy enclosure made from steel, built on a treated wooden frame. Not only does it give the area a clean, finished look, but it also protects the equipment from the elements, extending its lifespan.

  1. An enclosure protects against weather conditions

The biggest issue with exposed pool equipment is constant exposure to the sun, rain, and wind. In the summer, when the sun is beating down all day, temperatures can rise significantly, affecting how well the pump and filter work. And let’s not forget the damage rain can cause, leading to rust and other wear and tear says Vendas – a specialist custom pool shed builder.

An enclosure keeps your equipment in much better shape while still allowing easy access for maintenance, thanks to hinged or sliding doors. It’s a simple solution that prevents a lot of potential problems.

  1. Reducing noise is an added bonus

One thing we hadn’t thought about beforehand was how much noise the pool pump and filter can make. During the day, it’s not too noticeable, but if you’re trying to relax in the evening, that constant hum can be a bit annoying. A sturdy enclosure doesn’t just keep everything out of sight—it also helps dampen the noise.

This doesn’t mean you should completely seal off the equipment, since ventilation is essential for safe and efficient operation. But with smart design and the right materials, you can significantly reduce the noise level, making your backyard a more peaceful place.

  1. Safety and convenience go hand in hand

Beyond aesthetics and functionality, there’s another important reason to consider an enclosure: safety. Pool equipment is often placed in an out-of-the-way corner, but that doesn’t mean kids or pets won’t find their way to it. By enclosing everything neatly, you reduce the risk of accidents.

At the same time, a well-designed enclosure ensures that you still have easy access for regular maintenance. The combination of hinged doors or sliding panels allows quick access when needed, without disrupting the overall look of your yard.

Having a pool in the backyard has been an incredible addition to our home, but it does come with a few practical challenges. Fortunately, there are smart solutions that make maintenance easier, protect the equipment, and keep the yard looking tidy. After our first summer, we’ve learned a lot—and we’re already thinking about the next improvements. Because if there’s one thing we’ve discovered, it’s that you’re never really done perfecting your pool and outdoor space!
